IRS provides extension of time to file returns affected by outage of Wolters Kluwer’s CCH software

The Internal Revenue Service has granted a seven-day extension for Form 990, 1120 and 1065 filings that are due May 15 and were affected by last week’s outage of CCH tax software.

The Internal Revenue Service has granted a seven-day extension for Form 990, 1120 and 1065 filings that are due May 15 and were affected by last week’s outage of CCH tax software.

On Monday May 6, all CCH tax products, which are based in the cloud, were taken offline. On the following day, Wolters Kluwer, makers of the CCH products, confirmed the outage was the result of a malware attack.

As stated by a notice from Wolters Kluwer to its customers, affected filers now have until May 22nd to file.  Filings utilizing this additional extension will not be considered late, so all penalties and interest will be waived.

Mazars Insight:

This is a welcome extension after the unprecedented, almost week-long outage of CCH tax software. Although only approved for Federal returns at this point, Wolters Kluwer has indicated that the company is working with state tax agencies to obtain similar relief.
