Mazars Launches 2021 US Water Industry Outlook

New York, NY – October 25, 2021 – Mazars, a leading audit, tax, and advisory firm in the US, today announced the launch of the 2021 US Water Industry Outlook. The fifth edition of this flagship report represents 10 years of research, publication and commitment by Mazars to the water industry.

The 2021 Outlook offers perspectives on key topics surrounding operations, finance, and future trends, along with two new sections on COVID-19 and Diversity and Inclusion.

“One interesting item we discovered, among many, is that the pandemic caused most companies across industries to significantly refocus on their people. Leaders have been re-awakened to the importance of their people and how valuable they are to an organization,” said Jerome Devillers, Energy, Infrastructure and Environment Practice Leader.

The key findings include:

- The short and long terms impacts COVID-19 will have on the industry and its adoption of new technology.

- Uncertainties around political commitment, insufficient regulatory enforcement, and the need for more transactions and opportunities to be financeable are making it difficult for water to attract the capital needed to address investment requirements.

- Emerging contaminants regulation and climate resilient infrastructure are the drivers of growth in coming years.

- Leaders are focused on talent and the importance of a diverse human capital for an organization.

- Data technologies, asset management, and IT infrastructure are at the center of operations’ strategies to improve efficiencies and reduce cyber risk.

The Water Industry Outlook is based on a 26-question survey that was conducted in 2020/2021, capturing the perspectives of different stakeholders, including water and wastewater systems operators, procurement and other support for water and wastewater companies, government regulators and the investment community.
